Call for Papers

Graphics Interface 2023 Registration is now open at https://graphicsinterface.org/conference/2023/attending-and-registration/. We encourage everyone to register before April 28 to enjoy the early bird rates. Accommodations should also be arranged as early as possible, as hotel rates in Victoria can skyrocket any time now that summer is just around the corner, and cheaper on-campus accommodations are limited (https://graphicsinterface.org/conference/2023/accommodation/).

Graphics Interface 2023 will be held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, between May 30 and June 2, 2023 (http://graphicsinterface.org/conference/2023/). If you have never been to Victoria before (https://www.tourismvictoria.com/), it is one of the nicest places to visit in June in North America! We have scheduled a rich program that consists of keynote talks, award talks, paper and poster presentations, special sessions/workshops/tutorials/panels, and multiple social activities such as onsite lunches, a gala dinner at the Butchart gardens (https://www.butchartgardens.com/), and an excursion to the Malahat Skywalk (https://malahatskywalk.com/). Please check out our tentative schedule here (https://graphicsinterface.org/conference/2023/schedule/). 

We are very excited to have two confirmed keynote speakers this year: Melanie Tory from Northeastern University, and Maneesh Agrawala from Stanford University. In addition, we have scheduled a special session on cloud rendering, simulation and animation, with eight invited speakers from various academic institutions and companies such as NVIDIA, Meta, Huawei, and Animal Logic. If you missed our first deadline for paper submission, read on to seize the last chance! 

Conference Format

GI 2023 will continue to support online participation in a hybrid mode, although we focus more on in-person participation. More specifically, paper sessions, keynote and invited talks will be streamed to remote participants, while activities such as workshops and tutorials will only be available for in-person attendees. We encourage physical attendance from all to fully take advantage of a large live audience, the extensive opportunities to connect with other researchers in a great environment, and to build strong research communities. We require at least one author of each accepted paper to attend and present in person. Paper presenters who cannot be here due to medical or visa issues will need to submit a pre-recorded presentation ahead of the conference, and the video will be played at the time of presentation. Remote paper presenters will also be able to answer questions after their pre-recorded talk via Zoom.

 
We invite submissions covering all aspects of HCI, graphics, and visualization. Research at the intersections of these areas, as well as intersections with computer vision, machine learning, and artificial intelligence are also encouraged. All paper submissions are rigorously peer reviewed by at least three reviewers.

Submission Instructions 

Following the lead of other conferences in Graphics/HCI, we use a multiple deadline model for GI. The first round has successfully ended with high-quality accepted papers due to the large number of submissions. For the second round, please pay attention to the following dates:

First submission/review cycle:

  • Paper Deadline: Friday, December 16, 2022, 11:59 pm AoE
  • Papers assigned to IPC: Tuesday, December 20, 2021
  • Expert reviews due: Friday, January 13, 2023
  • Author Notification: Wednesday, January 18, 2023

Second submission/review cycle:

  • Paper deadline: Sunday, 2nd April 2023, 11:59pm AoE
  • Author Notification: Sunday, 30th April 2023
  • Camera-ready Due: Monday, May 15, 2023

We welcome new submissions, as well as re-submissions for rejected papers from the first round (with reviewers’ major concerns addressed and feedback incorporated). Review Process

GI 2023 uses OpenReview. This system, which has been used for GI since 2020, allows for increased transparency and accountability during peer review. 

  • GI 2023 submissions will continue to be double-blind: authors will not know reviewers’ identities, and reviewers will not know authors’ identities.
  • Immediately upon submission, each paper will become available publicly and anonymously and time-stamped accordingly. This eliminates the need to post submissions simultaneously on ArXiv, and consequently authors are prohibited from deanonymizing their papers by posting them on ArXiv or elsewhere. 
  • After the review period, all reviewers’ scores and comments will be simultaneously revealed publicly and anonymously for each submission. The author identities of each accepted submission will be revealed, whereas authors of rejected papers may decide to withdraw their submission if they do not wish to keep a de-anonymized and time-stamped public record of their submission.

Conference Background

Graphics Interface is the Canadian annual conference devoted to computer graphics, interactive systems, and human-computer interaction. It is the oldest regularly-scheduled computer graphics and HCI conference; the first conference was held in 1969. For more details, visit http://graphicsinterface.org/past-conferences/.


All accepted GI papers will be indexed in the ACM Digital Library and will be open access in the GI archive. The Michael A. J. Sweeney Award will be awarded at the conference to the best student papers in computer graphics and HCI. Additionally, authors of top papers will be invited to submit revised and extended versions to the journals IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG) and Computers & Graphics.
